NEWSFLASH: Border Crossings Between Canada and Western NY After Car Explosion at Rainbow Bridge

All four international bridge crossings between Canada and Western New York are closed due to a vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge crossing.

According to sources, a passenger vehicle leaving Canada at a high rate of speed exploded as it reached the primary inspection lane with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, Whirlpool Bridge are also closed in both directions due to security related concerns. There is currently no timeline for the reopening of these ports of entry.

Discussions between Ottawa and Washington are ongoing.

There are no commercial trucks that cross at the Rainbow Bridge. However, the Peace Bridge and Queenston Lewiston Bridge are critical trade links serving the Canada-US trade community. Approximately 6500 trucks a day cross the two bridges moving $185 million in trade. On annual basis 1.7 million trucks travel across the two bridges moving $67 billion in trade.
