The Canadian Trucking Alliance is very disappointed by today’s announcement to provide subsidies to the steel industry for utilizing marine and rail shippers for domestic shipments, but not for the trucking industry.
“It’s an extremely disappointing decision to exclude the trucking industry from this program,” said CTA president and CEO Stephen Laskowski. “CTA reached out to the Government of Canada multiple times earlier this year to understand the direction of this program. We were told at the time little was known and that more details would be provided. We made it clear that excluding the trucking industry would harm our members’ businesses. Unfortunately, we heard nothing about this program until today’s announcement; I guess that’s the extent of our consultation.”
How this will impact the domestic supply chain and its competitiveness will be determined based on lanes, service and price sensitivities, but the bulk of steel haulers in trucking are family-run businesses that are now at risk of significant loss because of this discriminatory government policy,” says Laskowski.
“The Government of Canada needs to revisit today’s announcement. Helping the steel industry and its workers should not come at the expense of family-run trucking companies.”
