The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) was informed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) that the truck turnaround policy for major ACI AMPS penalties, will once again be extended until December 31, 2019 in the highway mode.
This will be the third extension of the truck turnaround, which was first put in place in 2017. The turnaround option allows carriers to avoid costly monetary penalties for failure to submit ACI data by allowing a truck driver to return to the U.S. and submit their paperwork before entering Canada.
“Based on the positive feedback from CBSA and the high level of compliance by carriers over the last year, the extension of the truck turnaround was a win-win scenario for both government and industry,” says CTA’s director or policy and industry awareness programs, Lak Shoan.
The joint CBSA/CTA AMPS working group has made strong progress in addressing compliance with the AMPS regime but continues to discuss options that would help alleviate carriers’ concerns regarding monetary penalties and how they are applied, including the development of a data-based compliance system, and the introduction of additional benefits for trusted traders.
