National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Added to Labour Code as National Holiday

Legislation to establish National Day for Truth and Reconciliation for workers in federally regulated workplaces received royal assent.

This bill was passed with unanimous support on June 3.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will be observed as a statutory holiday on September 30, starting this year.

This legislation will require that employers covered under Part III of the Canada Labour Code (federally regulated workplaces) provide their employees with a paid day off on September 30 (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation) of each year. Should employees be required to work any hours on that day, employers would have to pay them, in addition to the holiday pay for that day, at a rate equal to at least one and one-half times their regular rate of wages. Managers required to work on September 30 would receive their normal rate of pay, but would be given a holiday with pay at another time.
