Avian Flu Outbreak and the Transport of Poultry and Processed Foods in AB and ON

Due to the recent outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), identified in Alberta and Ontario, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has established Primary Control Zones (PCZ) to prevent the spread of HPAI. Additional zones will be created in these provinces as required.

As a result of this declaration, birds, their products, and by-products, as well as things exposed to birds cannot be moved into, out of, within, or through PCZ except by permission. More information regarding the Avian influenza control zones in Ontario and Alberta can be found here.

The movement of poultry, chicks, eggs, and raw poultry meat might need a movement permit, depending on how close they are to an infected zone or if they plan to route into, out of or through an infected zone.

The federal government has created a permitting hotline for Ontario and Alberta, more information on permits is available here.

Government and industry representatives have indicated that there are no issues with the transport of processed foods, or the movement of other livestock other than poultry.
