Economic Growth

The Canadian Trucking Alliance is dedicated to ensuring the prosperity of the Canadian trucking industry and its vital contribution to the nation’s economic growth. We believe that a strong and competitive trucking sector is essential for facilitating trade, generating jobs, and supporting businesses across the country.

We champion a thriving Canadian trucking industry, advocating for policies that foster a competitive business environment, drive innovation, and support a skilled workforce.

Priorities & Initiatives

Championing Fair Competition

Our top priority is eradicating the “Driver Inc.” scheme, a pervasive practice of worker misclassification and tax evasion that we estimate costs the Canadian government up to $1 billion annually in lost revenue. The CTA actively pushes for increased enforcement against non-compliant operators, demands the reinstatement of mandatory T4A issuance to improve accountability and transparency, and calls for stricter penalties to deter those who engage in this illegal activity.

Optimizing Tax Policies

We champion tax reforms that enhance the industry’s competitiveness and encourage investment. This includes supporting the extension of the Accelerated Investment Incentive (AII), proposing an increase in the small business deduction limit, and advocating for a comprehensive review of the tax system to ensure it supports businesses and workers in the trucking sector.

Innovation and Technology Adoption

The CTA encourages the adoption of new technologies and practices that enhance productivity and efficiency. We advocate for better support for testing green and emerging technologies, the reinstatement of the federal excise tax refund for trucking idle-reduction technology, and tax exemptions for fuel-saving technologies.

Developing a Skilled Workforce

A skilled and stable workforce is the backbone of a thriving trucking industry. We advocate for policies that support driver recruitment and retention, including improved training standards, streamlined licensing processes, and programs to attract underrepresented groups. We also push for changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker program to address labour shortages and advocate for increased enforcement against the “Driver Inc.” model.

Balancing Environmental and Economic Considerations

The CTA recognizes the importance of environmental sustainability alongside economic growth. The trucking industry is committed to reducing its carbon footprint, investing billions in related technologies and practices. The CTA advocates for practical, technologically feasible policies that align with the realities of the trucking marketplace and operating environment to avoid supply shortages and disruptions.

Looking Ahead

The CTA is dedicated to fostering a policy environment that supports the continued growth and prosperity of the Canadian trucking industry. This includes working with governments to review and refine the tax system to ensure it remains supportive of the industry’s competitiveness. The CTA will also prioritize collaboration with governments and stakeholders to address emerging challenges and opportunities, ensuring the industry’s vital role in driving economic growth is recognized and supported. By working together, we can build a strong and sustainable future for the Canadian trucking industry and the broader economy.
