The Canadian Trucking Alliance is extending its deepest condolences on the passing of Douglas “Doug” Alexander Smith, founder of Manitoulin Transport and one of Canada’s most influential trucking leaders.
Over more than seven decades, Doug’s vision, entrepreneurial spirit, and unwavering commitment to excellence helped build one of Canada’s most respected transportation companies while creating opportunities for countless employees and communities across the country.
Doug founded Manitoulin Transport in 1960. He believed that success is built on dedication and hard work, and those principles shaped both the company and the legacy he leaves behind. Despite the company’s remarkable growth, Doug never lost sight of what mattered most: dedicated staff, loyal customers, and strong partners who became part of the Manitoulin Transport family.
A Member of the Order of Canada and recipient of numerous industry honours, Doug’s legacy as a business leader, philanthropist, and champion of Canadian trucking will endure for generations.
Our thoughts are with the Smith family, the Manitoulin Group of Companies, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of life will be held on September 12 in Gore Bay, Ontario with details forthcoming.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour Doug’s memory are invited to support organizations that strengthen communities and help people in need – values that guided his life and reflected the generosity he showed every day.
