As previously reported by CTA and mainstream outlets, the Government of Canada announced it will mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II with a national day of mourning on September 19. The national holiday will be held on the same day as the Queen’s funeral in London.
Since that initial announcement, federal Minister of Labour Seamus O’Regan has clarified that this will only apply to federal government employees. In a Tweet, the Minister stated:
“September 19, 2022 will be a holiday for federal government employees. It will be a day of mourning for the passing of Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada. Federally regulated employers are welcomed to follow suit, but they are not required to do so.”
CTA will continue to update carriers should more details become available. However, it appears that no federal holiday will officially be implemented for federally regulated private sector employers.
