Safety & Compliance

The Canadian Trucking Alliance is deeply committed to enhancing safety and compliance within the Canadian trucking industry. We believe that safety is paramount to protecting both the public and the integrity of our supply chain. As an industry that shares its workplace with the public, we willingly accept the responsibility to meet the highest safety standards. We advocate for policies and initiatives that promote a culture of safety, ensure rigorous training standards, and address the growing problem of non-compliance within the industry.

CTA champions a comprehensive approach to safety and compliance, advocating for policies and technologies that protect drivers, the public, and the integrity of Canada’s supply chain.

The Multifaceted Nature of Safety & Compliance

Safety and compliance in the trucking industry is a complex issue with many interconnected facets. It encompasses everything from ensuring that drivers are properly trained and qualified, to maintaining vehicles in safe operating condition, to adhering to strict regulations regarding hours of service and cargo securement. The CTA recognizes that a comprehensive approach is needed to address all aspects of safety and compliance, and we work tirelessly alongside Provincial Associations to advocate for policies and initiatives that promote a safe and responsible trucking industry.

Priorities & Initiatives

Strengthening Entry-Level Training (ELT)

The CTA is actively working to address inconsistencies in ELT programs across jurisdictions and advocates for stricter oversight of training schools. We believe that strong ELT programs are essential for laying the foundation for safe and responsible trucking practices.

A Graduated Licensing System

The CTA supports the introduction of a graduated licensing system for new truck drivers. This system would provide a structured approach to gaining skills, including mandatory mentorship and co-driver programs, ensuring new drivers are adequately prepared for the challenges of operating a commercial vehicle.

Combating Non-Compliance

The CTA is unwavering in its commitment to tackling the pervasive issue of non-compliance within the trucking industry, which undermines labour standards, tax laws, and safety regulations. We are actively pushing for increased enforcement and penalties against non-compliant carriers, including those involved in the Driver Inc. scheme.

Improving Safety Fitness Certificates

The CTA is working with the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) to improve the safety fitness certificate system. This includes addressing gaps in oversight between provinces and territories and taking action against companies with problematic safety records.

Enhancing Border Security

The CTA collaborates with the government and enforcement agencies to enhance border security and protect the trucking supply chain. This includes advocating for measures to prevent illegal cargo shipments and address immigration and labour issues.

Supporting Technological Advancements in Safety

Technology plays a vital role in improving safety outcomes in the trucking industry. We actively champion the development and implementation of advanced safety technologies that can help prevent accidents, reduce injuries, and save lives. These include mandatory speed limiters, electronic logging devices (ELDs), roll stability systems, and more.

Looking Ahead

The CTA is dedicated to continuously improving safety and compliance. We proactively engage with stakeholders to shape the future of trucking safety through research, collaboration, and advocacy, championing a safety-first culture and embracing emerging technologies. We also address emerging challenges and strengthen international collaboration to harmonize safety standards. This future-oriented approach ensures the Canadian trucking industry remains a leader in safety and compliance.
