{"id":9522,"date":"2026-06-14T16:56:38","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T16:56:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/?p=9522"},"modified":"2026-06-14T16:56:42","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T16:56:42","slug":"globe-editorial-a-loophole-you-can-drive-a-truck-though","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/globe-editorial-a-loophole-you-can-drive-a-truck-though\/","title":{"rendered":"Globe Editorial: A Loophole You Can Drive a Truck Though"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Globe &amp; Mail editorial page \u2013 the voice of the paper \u2013 took aim Sunday at how and why the Driver Inc crisis&nbsp;was allowed to proliferate for more than a decade, despite years of warnings by CTA and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/editorials\/article-a-loophole-you-can-drive-a-truck-through\/\">Globe editorial<\/a>&nbsp;is behind a paywall \u2013 we encourage members to subscribe and read it, but here\u2019s some sections:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The possibility of enabling the growth of the underground economy should have been obvious from the start. And any excuse for inaction had vanished by late 2018, when the standing committee on finance flagged the industry\u2019s concerns over Driver Inc. in its annual pre-budget report. That report notes that \u201cthe Canadian Trucking Alliance urged the government to stop the widespread tax evasion practice known as \u2018Driver Inc.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It would take nearly seven years, and change in prime ministers for the government to heed that urging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course, those companies are responsible for their actions, both legally and morally. They should be held to account, starting with the Canada Revenue Agency ensuring that they all pay every cent owing in taxes, interest and penalties. Fines are likely in order. And if there is evidence of criminal fraud, those cases should be pursued vigorously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That cannot be the end of the effort to roll up Driver Inc., however.
