According to the federal government, the review is intended to identify ways to strengthen and improve the collective bargaining process while promoting greater labour stability.

Importantly for the transportation and business communities, the consultation also included discussion on two high-priority issues in the trucking industry: worker misclassification and “Driver Inc.” practices, as well as the implementation and impact of the federal mandated medical leave provisions (10 paid sick days).

As part of the consultation process, ESDC convened a series of invite-only roundtables with departmental officials, one session with the Minister of Jobs and Families, and the Secretary of State for Labour. CTA was invited to participate in all sessions and submitted formal written comments to the department.

“Stable labour relations are essential for both workers and employers, and we need stronger enforcement measures to address ongoing non-compliance issues such as worker misclassification and wage theft,” said Jonathan Blackham, Director or Policy and Public Affairs with CTA. “We also continue to raise longstanding concerns regarding the implementation of the 10 paid sick day requirements.

“On the enforcement side, we are advocating for stronger penalties under the AMP system for employers found guilty of misclassification and wage theft violations. We also think greater use of daily penalties by the department would significantly increase the financial consequences for repeat and serious offenders.”

With both consultation processes ending, the federal government is expected to begin evaluating feedback and considering next steps. CTA will continue monitoring developments closely and will provide members more details when available.

CTA has been actively engaged in recent federal consultations led by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) on two significant policy initiatives: a review of the Administrative Monetary Penalty (AMPs)…

[28,17
545,912
post-9473","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-labour-hr-driver-shortage","category-news-releases","tag-amps","tag-esdc
["GET
