Mullen Group is increasingly likely to invest capital into the U.S. market if Canadian politicians don\u2019t \u201cget their act together\u201d in response to the threat of U.S. tariffs, reports James Menzies of Trucknews.com<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to analysts on a Q4 earnings call on Feb. 13, chairman and senior executive officer Murray Mullen made no secret that he\u2019s more bullish on the U.S. market than in Canada, reports TN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt really depends on Canada\u2019s response to how it\u2019s going to be competitive with the Americans,\u201d Mullen told analysts. \u201cIf Canada doesn\u2019t get its act together \u2013 the politicians and Canadians \u2013 we\u2019re going to turn our attention to the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, he doesn\u2019t like what he sees. He noted that trucking businesses in the U.S. are excited about the growth opportunities they see under the Trump administration. \u201cUp here, we\u2019re on our heels a bit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mullen sees no economic growth for Canada this year. \u201cIf they\u2019re going to win, we\u2019ve got to follow the money,\u201d Mullen said of the U.S., noting the Canadian dollar is \u201cworth nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf Canada is not a place to deploy capital, we\u2019re not going to deploy it here,\u201d he added, noting the company has pivoted in the past due to changing market dynamics, such as when it lessened its reliance on oil and gas. \u201cI hope I don\u2019t have to pivot away from Canada, but I have to do what\u2019s best for our shareholders and if pivoting away is required for our shareholders, I\u2019ll pivot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. trucking industry, Mullen reiterated, is flashing signs of improving demand and increased optimism. Mullen Group currently operates a 3PL business in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Mullen remains poised to make acquisitions on either side of the border, those will have to fit three criteria: the target must be a good fit with Mullen Group; the price must allow for an ROI; and there must be synergies available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mullen was coy about the type of acquisition he\u2019d seek south of the border, but he indicated it wouldn\u2019t be LTL. \u201cWe can\u2019t get big enough,\u201d he said of becoming an LTL player in the U.S. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at other verticals where we think there\u2019s opportunity. I can\u2019t say more than that. We\u2019re going to go where the capital goes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
