{"id":3605,"date":"2023-10-20T15:33:31","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T15:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/us-economy-tops-truckings-worries-ahead-of-2024\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:41:57","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:41:57","slug":"us-economy-tops-truckings-worries-ahead-of-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/us-economy-tops-truckings-worries-ahead-of-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"US Economy Tops Trucking\u2019s Worries Ahead of 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rising costs and slowing freight demand has carriers and drivers most concerned about the US economy, according to ATRI\u2019s annual survey of industry stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe economy\u2014and not in a good way,\u201d is how Rebecca Brewster, president and COO of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/truckingresearch.org\/\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\" data-feathr-link-aids=\"[&quot;5d3f06f2c0645c763104b681&quot;]\">American Transportation Research Institute<\/a>, characterized the top issue facing the trucking industry heading into 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Truck parking, fuel prices, driver shortage, and driver pay rounded out the top five issues, according to more than 4,000 transportation stakeholders surveyed by ATRI, which the CTA is a member of.<\/p>\n<p>Lawsuit abuse reform, driver distraction, driver retention, and detention\/delay at customer facilities rounded out the most pressing issues facing motor carriers and drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Trucking total marginal costs hit a new high in 2022 after 21.3% to $2.251 per mile, according to ATRI\u2019s\u00a02023 Operation Costs of Trucking\u00a0report. Fuel was the main driver of that increase (53.7% higher than in 2021), but other expenses, such as driver wages, went up 15.5% to 72.4 cents per mile.<\/p>\n<p>This was the first time operational costs topped $2 per mile, according to Brewster. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to drop down below that for the foreseeable future.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>To request or obtain a copy of the
