{"id":3562,"date":"2023-07-13T19:15:11","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T19:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/gta-truckers-ask-govt-to-crack-down-on-labour-abuse\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:42:09","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:42:09","slug":"gta-truckers-ask-govt-to-crack-down-on-labour-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/gta-truckers-ask-govt-to-crack-down-on-labour-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"GTA Truckers  Ask Govt to Crack Down on Labour Abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of truck drivers, called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice4workers.org\/truck\">Justice For Truck Drivers<\/a>, held a rally outside the Labour Program office in Toronto last weekend, calling on the federal government to better regulate employer carriers to stop labour abuse, what they say is \u2018wage theft\u2019 and to better regulate the trucking industry.<\/p>\n<p>As reported by Toronto media, the drivers claim their employers aren\u2019t paying them money owed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s literally no fear amongst employers to break the law,\u201d said Navi Aujla, the executive director of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.labourcsp.ca\/\">Labour Community Services of Peel<\/a>, who says her office receives hundreds of requests for help from frustrated truck drivers. \u201cWe\u2019ve had over 160 truck drivers call us in the last two years because wage theft is so rampant in the industry and the numbers only keep growing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Trucking Alliance has been trying to shed light on these and other related labour issues in trucking. Carriers who operate the scheme known as Driver Inc \u2013 where they improperly misclassify employee drivers as independent operators to avoid paying taxes and benefits and provide protections to workers \u2013 also often tend to disregard many labour rules and responsibilities, including withholding various other payments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not get my first paycheck until three months after I started working,\u201d Manjinder Singh a new driver, told <a href=\"https:\/\/toronto.citynews.ca\/2023\/07\/08\/gta-truckers-wage-theft-rally\/\">CityNews<\/a>. He said is he owned more than $10,000. \u201cWhen you\u2019re not getting paid every week, why should you keep working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/employment-social-development\/services\/labour-contact.html\">federal Labour Program<\/a>\u00a0is meant to help wage earners dispute payment issues with their employers without having to hire a lawyer and go to small claims court. But Singh says there are problems when it comes to enforcing payment orders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe payment order that they give to the employer, it\u2019s nothing for the employer. The employer just looks at it and does nothing \u2013 it doesn\u2019t scare (them).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice4workers.org\/justice_for_truck_drivers_townhall\">planning to hold a town hall<\/a>\u00a0at the Jim Archdekin Recreation Centre on Conestoga Drive in Brampton on July 22
