{"id":3547,"date":"2023-05-31T20:18:43","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T20:18:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/cta-ircc-announces-truck-drivers-included-in-new-express-entry-category-based-selection\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:42:10","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:42:10","slug":"cta-ircc-announces-truck-drivers-included-in-new-express-entry-category-based-selection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/cta-ircc-announces-truck-drivers-included-in-new-express-entry-category-based-selection\/","title":{"rendered":"CTA: IRCC Announces Truck Drivers Included in New Express Entry,\u00a0Category-Based Selection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced today the first-ever launch of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/news\/2023\/05\/canada-launches-new-process-to-welcome-skilled-newcomers-with-work-experience-in-priority-jobs-as-permanent-residents.html\">category-based selection<\/a>\u00a0for Canada\u2019s flagship economic immigration management system, Express Entry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the announcement, trucking was part of a select few occupations to be included. In practice, category-based selection will allow Canada to issue invitations to prospective permanent residents with specific skills, training or language ability, with transport truck drivers (NOC73300) being officially included as eligible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November of 2022, with CTA staff present, Minister\u00a0of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser announced IRCCs\u00a0implementation of the new\u00a0National Occupational Classification (NOC) 2021 for immigration programs, paving the way for trucking\u2019s entrance into the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/cta-government-of-canada-helps-secure-supply-chain-by-including-trucking-sector-into-express-entry\/\">Express Entry programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile we were very happy to see trucking included in the Express Entry Program last year, we also knew there was still work to be done on ensuring drivers were competitive within the program,\u201d said Jon Blackham, CTA\u2019s Director of Policy and Public Affairs. \u201cSo we put together what we thought was a compelling case for the trucking sector to be included in category-based selection and we\u00a0are\u00a0happy to see that reflected into today\u2019s announcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In late 2022, IRCC held a public consultation on enhancing Express Entry through category-based selection. CTA made a submission on behalf of the trucking industry in which a detailed business case was made for the inclusion of truck drivers (NOC 73300 \u2013 Transport Truck Drivers) to be included in the category-based selection system. As part of those discussions,\u00a0CTA has also proposed longer term solutions,\u00a0including those aimed at ensuring the industry has meaningful long-term access to the program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs IRCC and the Government of Canada know, the economy and the skills that are most needed to sustain it are changing,\u201d said\u00a0CTA chair Greg Munden. \u201cWe would like to extend our gratitude to Minister Fraser and IRCC for appreciating the essential role trucking plays in the supply chain and larger economy. This will pay dividends to all industries, sectors and consumers who rely on the trucking industry\u2019s services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the NOC system itself has changed to better categorize and recognize the true classification of occupations, Blackham says immigration programs like Express Entry will\u00a0need\u00a0to similarly adapt to ensure the most in-demand jobs, like truck drivers, are being prioritized and that the point system remains responsive and fair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As today\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/news\/2023\/05\/canada-launches-new-process-to-welcome-skilled-newcomers-with-work-experience-in-priority-jobs-as-permanent-residents.html\">announcement notes<\/a>, further details on the timing of invitations for individual categories and how to apply will be announced in the coming weeks by the Department.
