{"id":3389,"date":"2022-06-17T13:47:27","date_gmt":"2022-06-17T13:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/labour-minister-takes-on-driver-inc-in-house-of-commons\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:43:10","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:43:10","slug":"labour-minister-takes-on-driver-inc-in-house-of-commons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/labour-minister-takes-on-driver-inc-in-house-of-commons\/","title":{"rendered":"Labour Minister Takes on Driver Inc. in House of Commons"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"xxmsonormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Canadian Labour Minister\u00a0<\/span>Seamus O&rsquo;Regan issued the federal government\u2019s strongest statement yet against the trucking industry misclassification scheme known as Driver Inc.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"xxmsolistparagraph\">Speaking in the House of Commons, the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Minister stated that Driver Inc \u201cdeprives workers of their basic rights\u201d and assured Canadians that Ottawa will begin cracking down on the illegitimate business model. \u201cWhere non-compliance is found, we will take action \u2013 including through orders, fines, and even prosecutions,\u201d he stated.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">The statements are welcomed by the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA), which for years has urged governments and regulatory agencies at all levels across the country to put an end to what industry and the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i>Toronto Star<\/i>have have called a \u201cbillion-dollar scam\u201d based on rampant tax avoidance, labour abuse and \u201cshoddy\u201d safety practices by unscrupulous carriers.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"xxmsolistparagraph\">He confirmed that ESDC is currently conducting enforcement activities in Ontario with plans to expand these efforts nationally.<span class=\"xapple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"xxmsolistparagraph\">\u201cWe expect all employers to treat their employees fairly, and those who fail to do so will face consequences,\u201d<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>O&rsquo;Regan continued.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe are committed to protecting workers, and we will continue to work with the sector to crack down on Drivers Inc.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"xxmsolistparagraph\">While CTA is encouraged by the Minister\u2019s public remarks and ESDC\u2019s Driver Inc. pilot program in the province of Ontario, the Alliance stresses that after many years of discussion about the problem, a dramatic escalation of national enforcement across multiple government agencies is required to protect the rights of all workers in the trucking sector as well as the ability of compliant trucking fleets to compete against this illegal scam.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"xxmsolistparagraph\">\u201cCTA appreciates the public support by Minister O\u2019Regan to fight Driver Inc. and now looks forward to continuing to work with the department on the rapid deployment of enforcement upon the Driver Inc scam, including the exclusive use of fines as well as prosecutions where applicable,\u201d says CTA president Stephen Laskowski.<\/p>\n<p>To listen\/watch the Minister\u2019s comments please see below:<\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"Labour Minister Takes on Driver Inc. in House of Commons:\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GRKUeZcPOS0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
