{"id":3243,"date":"2021-11-19T19:05:33","date_gmt":"2021-11-19T19:05:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/ata-1-million-immigrant-truck-drivers-needed-over-next-decade\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:43:49","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:43:49","slug":"ata-1-million-immigrant-truck-drivers-needed-over-next-decade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/ata-1-million-immigrant-truck-drivers-needed-over-next-decade\/","title":{"rendered":"ATA: 1 Million Immigrant Truck Drivers Needed Over Next Decade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cTo keep up with demand over the next decade, trucking will need to recruit nearly one million new drivers to close the gap caused by demand for freight, projected retirements and other issues,\u00a0\u00bb according to the American Trucking Associations.<\/p>\n<p>Bob Costello, the Association\u2019s chief economist recently said that \u201cincreased demand for freight, pandemic-related challenges from early retirements, closed driving schools and DMVs, and other pressures are really pushing up demand for drivers and subsequently the shortage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/andyjsemotiuk\/2021\/11\/16\/could-us-immigration-help-solve-need-to-recruit-1-million-new-truck-drivers-over-next-decade\/?sh=4590464266ba\">Forbes pointed out<\/a> the statement \u00a0comes amid major\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/supply-chain-crisis-60-minutes-2021-11-14\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/supply-chain-crisis-60-minutes-2021-11-14\/\" aria-label=\"supply chain problem\">supply chain problem<\/a>s\u00a0across North America that delaying the delivery of goods to customers all over the country, particularly for the upcoming Christmas season needs to be done to resolve the long term problem of truck driver shortages, Costello said.<\/p>\n<p>Costello projects the current shortfall of 80,000 drivers will grow to 160,000 truckers by 2030. \u201cThe industry is raising pay at five times the historic average, but this isn\u2019t just a pay issue. We have an aging workforce, a workforce that is overwhelmingly male and finding ways to address those issues is key to narrowing the shortage,\u201d says Costello.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" data-nosnippet=\"true\">In Canada, which is experiencing its own driver shortage and similar supply chain disruptions, the Canadian Trucking Alliance is also working with the government to boost training dollars for new entrants and ensure immigrants coming to Canada who want to work in the industry <a href=\"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/cta-want-to-improve-trucking-safety-focus-enforcement-on-driver-inc-carriers-implement-trusted-employer-model-and-enforce-eld-mandate\/\">are supported and protected<\/a> from unscrupulous carriers through a Trusted Employer model.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese workers should be permitted to work for compliant fleets that uphold Canadian labour and safety standards so they and their families can thrive and enjoy all the benefits of our great nation, says CTA.
