If not for a fuel surcharge, many trucking companies, namely smaller ones, would likely not be able to withstand the rising cost of diesel fuel, James Steed of Steed Standard Transport told the Toronto Sun.<\/p>\n

Like all other parts of the economy, the trucking industry is facing dramatically higher fuel costs this year, but many are able to pass along the increase in the form of a fuel surcharge to customers.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust in the last week, fuel has gone up three or four cents a litre since last Friday,\u201d said James Steed, who runs Steed Standard Transport in Stratford.<\/p>\n

Steed\u2019s family-run business relies on the industry surcharge to stay afloat.<\/p>\n

\u201cA carrier just can\u2019t absorb those costs with the fluctuating. It would put us out of business if we didn\u2019t have a fuel surcharge.\u201d Steed explained. \u201cThat\u2019s the key part of dealing with the ups and downs of fuel pricing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just wouldn\u2019t be able to survive,\u201d said Steed. \u201cThe system works. If it didn\u2019t, I wouldn\u2019t be here to answer the phone. Seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fuel is considered the second biggest cost for trucking companies \u2014 after labour, Marco Beghetto of the Canadian Trucking Alliance, told the Sun.<\/p>\n

Beghetto says the surcharge system keeps companies functioning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe markets are now convinced that we are heading towards an energy crisis,\u201d said Dan McTeague of Canadians For Affordable Energy.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we are now seeing the first effects of an energy crunch.\u201d<\/p>\n
