{"id":3198,"date":"2021-09-28T19:37:51","date_gmt":"2021-09-28T19:37:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/retailers-face-e-vehicle-charging-challenges-is-wireless-an-answer\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:43:57","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:43:57","slug":"retailers-face-e-vehicle-charging-challenges-is-wireless-an-answer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/retailers-face-e-vehicle-charging-challenges-is-wireless-an-answer\/","title":{"rendered":"Retailers Face E-Vehicle Charging Challenges \u2013 Is Wireless an Answer?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Retail fuel outlets including truck stops who must weigh investment in electric vehicle chargers say they face such challenges as customer \u201crange anxiety,\u201d high utility charges for electricity and political policy uncertainties.<\/p>\n<p>Several executives told a Natso virtual webinar titled, \u201cBusiness Case for EV Charging at Retail,\u201d that even when retailers do make the investments, they don\u2019t plan on seeing any profit for at least a few years, Transport Topics reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are definitely in an evaluative mode right now where we are looking at demand for electric vehicle charging infrastructure in various parts of the country,\u201d said Tim Langenkamp, vice president and general counsel for Pilot Co.\u2019s energy division. \u201cBut the demand is not uniform across the nation. The regulatory environment is definitely in flux, and there needs to be a successful energy transition with as few dropped balls as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest obstacles to that successful transition is for utility companies to offer reasonable electricity rates to retailers wanting to install chargers on their properties, said Eva Rigamonti, associate general counsel for RaceTrac Inc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the rate structure is a huge impediment to private investment,\u201d Rigamonti said.<\/p>\n<p>Retailers and charge providers are clearly hoping to receive assistance from federal and state grants to begin building out a charging infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Another challenge is motorist \u201crange anxiety,\u201d said David Fialkov, Natso\u2019s executive vice president of government affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if you don\u2019t live in a house with a garage with your own charger or in an apartment building where you don\u2019t have overnight parking with access to a charging station, you can have range anxiety even when you\u2019re not traveling far,\u201d he said. \u201cEven going to a charging station in town, it must be a fast-charging station.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read the full article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/retailers-face-challenges-installing-electric-vehicle-chargers\"> here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a related article from Trickinginfo.com, <a href=\"https:\/\/cts.businesswire.com\/ct\/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.witricity.com%2F&amp;esheet=52495647&amp;newsitemid=20210922005182&amp;lan=en-US&amp;anchor=WiTricity&amp;index=1&amp;md5=a9c906f8ee51c84912cf5f29df03a7a1\">WiTricity<\/a>, a company that provides wireless charging systems, released results of a study that evaluated the relative total cost of ownership (TCO) of adopting and running an electric vehicle (EV) fleet for last-mile parcel delivery when those vehicles were equipped with wireless charging instead of plug-in charging.<\/p>\n<p>It found that when untethered from the cord, vehicles have more time to charge, and can do so at lower power, such as at the dock being loaded, at the depot being cleaned or prepped, or while parked.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that when using wireless charging technology, last-mile EV fleets saved up to 50% in TCO.<\/p>\n<p>In a standard plug-in model, EVs are taken out of service to charge: a driver moves the EV to the charger, plugs in, and there the EV remains until sufficiently charged. In contrast, wireless charging lets fleets adapt their charging model to existing business workflows by bringing the charge to the EVs where they are: at the dock being loaded, at the depot being cleaned or prepped, or while parked. Untethered from the cord, vehicles have more time to charge, and can do so at lower power.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome: lower costs by flattening the curve on \u201cdemand charges,\u201d the compensation paid to the utility for maintaining the grid with sufficient capacity to energize a customer\u2019s needs at peak draw. Given that electric utility charges are one of the top three components of the lifetime cost of an EV (the other two are vehicle miles traveled and vehicle purchase price), the result is a reduction in the overall TCO of going electric.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith businesses and government agencies upgrading their last-mile fleets to be electric \u2014 from delivery vans to mail trucks \u2014 there are clear, major benefits of being able to charge those wirelessly,\u201d said Alex Gruzen, WiTricity CEO. \u201cOur analysis shows that WiTricity\u2019s technology introduces great flexibility with
