{"id":3162,"date":"2021-07-23T15:44:37","date_gmt":"2021-07-23T15:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/cvsa-studying-how-inspectors-will-interact-with-commercial-avs\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:44:06","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:44:06","slug":"cvsa-studying-how-inspectors-will-interact-with-commercial-avs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/cvsa-studying-how-inspectors-will-interact-with-commercial-avs\/","title":{"rendered":"CVSA Studying How Inspectors Will Interact with Commercial AVs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is working with truck and automated driving systems (ADS) manufacturers and regulators on how to safely inspect and interact with autonomous commercial vehicles in the future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Some questions being considered, as reported by <em>Today\u2019s Trucking<\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">When SAE Level 4 autonomous trucks take to the road without safety drivers in the cab, how will they react to law enforcement? Will they be able to respond to sirens and pull over for law enforcement? Will police be able to identify the trucks are driverless? Will they be able to safely navigate weigh stations? <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Daniel Goff, head of policy with Kodiak Robotics, addressed those issues along with Will Schaefer, director of safety programs with CVSA during a webinar July 21.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0About 100 such trucks are currently being tested on-highway today, but with a safety driver behind the wheel and an engineer in the passenger seat to oversee the technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But Goff acknowledged these platforms are being layered on top of today\u2019s trucks \u2013 in Kodiak\u2019s case, the Kenworth T680 \u2013 so maintenance concerns such as tire and brake wear will remain, even when driverless. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has estimated about 93% of crashes are caused by driver error, and Goff said automation can reduce or eliminate those crashes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey never drive distracted, they don\u2019t get tired, they don\u2019t speed or drive aggressively,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re the among the world\u2019s most boring drivers \u2013 they\u2019re the safest, most boring vehicles on the road by design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CVSA\u2019s Schaefer said the alliance has been working with various groups, including manufacturers and the Technology &amp; Maintenance Council of the American Trucking Associations to figure this all out. It has come out with two recommendations so far: to work with manufacturers of the systems to create an ADS malfunction indicator light so inspectors can easily determine if the system is working; and to develop a system to show a truck has undergone an inspection while enroute.<\/p>\n<p>This, similar to an \u201cenhanced pre-trip inspection\u201d would qualify driverless trucks to bypass roadside inspections, something the CVSA is looking to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLimiting roadside stops may be beneficial safety-wise,\u201d Schaefer said, but added \u201cwe are not planning to take away law enforcement authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That means if driverless trucks will cross borders, there must still be processes in place for border guards to inspect them for contraband. CVSA has formed an Enforcement and Industry Modernization Committee that is examining these challenges. The committee was first formed to address such relatively simple complexities such as new aerodynamic fairings that make access to certain components difficult during roadside inspections.<\/p>\n<p>Schaefer said CVSA is well positioned to develop training materials and inspection requirements for companies operating such trucks, to ensure a comprehensive pre-trip inspection is conducted, in addition to an electronic remote inspection to occur while the truck is enroute.<\/p>\n<p>The motor carrier operating the truck will still be responsible for any out-of-service defects that occur.
