{"id":3042,"date":"2021-01-22T19:38:51","date_gmt":"2021-01-22T19:38:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/womens-trucking-federation-urges-washroom-access-for-drivers\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:44:31","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:44:31","slug":"womens-trucking-federation-urges-washroom-access-for-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/womens-trucking-federation-urges-washroom-access-for-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&rsquo;s Trucking Federation Urges Washroom Access for Drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>As the second wave of COVID-19 shuts down businesses and operations across Canada, the issue of lack of washroom facilities for truck drivers has resurfaced.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Truckers\u00a0delivering essential goods during the COVID-19 pandemic are facing a \u00ab\u00a0dehumanizing\u00a0\u00bb struggle to find open washrooms, one that could lead to health concerns down the road,\u201d says Shelley Uvanile-Hesch, CEO of the Women&rsquo;s Trucking Federation of Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Uvanile-Hesch was recently in the media to urge businesses shipping and accepting truck deliveries as well as chain restaurants to open their\u00a0facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">In an interview with CBC News, Uvanile-Hesch said many chain restaurants and\u00a0local businesses that remain open\u00a0have restricted access\u00a0to their facilities,\u00a0which means truckers working 12-hour shifts may end up not using\u00a0a restroom all day. She also called on carriers in the trucking industry to stand up for their drivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Last spring, the CTA and OTA <a href=\"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/higher-food-costs-challenge-truckers-as-dining-options-still-restricted\/\">led efforts <\/a>to urge businesses to accommodate truck drivers and <a href=\"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/restaurant-group-mcdonalds-express-to-cta-commitment-to-serve-truckers\/\">worked with Restaurants Canada <\/a>and other chains to open facilities and treat drivers <a href=\"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/elliot-mulroney-call-drivers-heroes-and-affirm-governments-unwavering-commitment-to-trucking\/\">with respect<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Uvanile-Hesch\u00a0 explained how some drivers, who spend half their day unloading at a facility without being allowed to use the facilities, were given a roll of toilet paper and told to go behind the building.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00ab\u00a0This is very dehumanizing. It\u00a0is so wrong on so many levels,\u00a0\u00bb Uvanile-Hesch\u00a0said. \u00ab\u00a0Drivers are human beings, we&rsquo;re not dogs. We don&rsquo;t go outside. We deserve to be able to go into a washroom like everybody else.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">In a statement, Natasha Tremblay, a spokesperson for Ontario&rsquo;s Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney, called it\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0unacceptable\u00a0\u00bb that drivers have been denied access to public restrooms and urged businesses to \u00ab\u00a0step up and support\u00a0\u00bb them.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00ab\u00a0Our government is committed to supporting the trucking industry. Truck drivers and commercial carriers have worked hard to keep goods moving for the people of Ontario and it is unacceptable that some of them have been denied washroom access,\u00a0\u00bb Tremblay said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The province also plans to keep\u00a018 seasonal rest area locations open, along with\u00a031 truck inspection stations and one\u00a0tourist information centre.
