Nearly 86,000 truckers entered Canada from the U.S. during the week ending May 31. That represents a decline of almost 22% compared to a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. freight volumes have surged since the Memorial Day weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The latest data point offers yet another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightwaves.com\/news\/todays-pickup-more-trucks-continue-to-cross-us-canada-border\">positive signal for cross-border freight<\/a>\u00a0as it slowly recovers from the COVID-19 slowdown. It also aligns with the rebound in freight volumes in the U.S. and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the uptick in cross-border trucking, merchandise trade between the U.S. and Canada declined by more than 35%, or C$23.4 billion, in April, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/200604\/dq200604a-eng.htm?HPA=1\">June 4 report released by Statistics Canada<\/a>. Auto manufacturing and energy accounted for most of that plunge.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. and Canadian freight volumes have recovered off their March lows, according to the Outbound Tender Volume indexes for both countries (<a href=\"https:\/\/sonar.surf\/admin\/sharepage\/955da111-247a-4bd0-85cd-5dea8ba6533c\/\">OTVI.CAN and OTVI.USA<\/a>) on FreightWaves\u2019 SONAR platform.<\/p>\n<p>But as Statistics Canada noted, \u201ca return to pre-COVID-19 production levels is not expected in the near-term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But even as freight volumes recover, carriers continue to run with a high percentage of empty miles.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week the President of the Canadian Trucking Alliance, Steve Laskowski,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/cta-pushes-scalability-and-meal-allowance-in-appearance-before-senate-national-finance-committee\/\">pressed Canadian lawmakers for more government aid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian trucking companies are seeking easier access to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightwaves.com\/news\/canadian-freight-falling-off-a-cliff-can-75-wage-subsidy-help\">Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy<\/a>.
