The Canadian Trucking Alliance is calling on all carriers to give feedback on how\u00a0<\/span>the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy\u00a0<\/span>(CEWS)\u00a0could be amended to better suit their needs, whether they are currently using the program or not.<\/span><\/p>\n

As\u00a0<\/span>reported by CTA<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>last week, the federal government announced it would be extending\u00a0<\/span>the CEWS by an additional 12 weeks to August 29, 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Canadian trucking sector has worked as hard as it can during this crisis to ensure Canadians continue to have access to essential items such as food and sanitary products,\u201d said CTA president Stephen Laskowski.\u00a0\u201cBut\u00a0it is becoming increasingly clear that as our industry continues to serve the supply chain and economy as required, it also faces\u00a0unique and\u00a0rapidly escalating challenges that require tailored solutions to protect the stability of the supply chain during the COVID-19 crisis and its aftermath.\u201d<\/p>\n

Responding to call from CTA and other business organizations, the federal government is now launching its\u00a0<\/span>consultation process\u00a0<\/a>to seek information and feedback from businesses of all sizes, in every sector \u2013 including trucking \u2013 on how the CEWS program can be adapted to better serve the needs of businesses and Canadians. All possible adjustments to the program are being considered, including the 30-percent revenue reduction threshold, with the stated aim of ensuring \u201cthe CEWS reflects the immediate needs of your business, and to support the post-crisis economic recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

CTA \u2013\u00a0<\/span>which argues the CEWS<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>should be scalable to be more inclusive of struggling carriers \u2013is encouraging carriers to champion the industry and to provide feedback by\u00a0clicking here<\/a>\u00a0to participate in the government\u2019s consultation and survey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe economic recovery process will not be possible without our industry,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Jonathan Blackham, CTA\u2019s director of Policy and Public Affairs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201cWe have an important story to tell and we hope carriers take the time to provide their insights on how we can keep Canada moving.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, CTA will also be preparing a formal submission on behalf of the industry.<\/p>\n

Laskowski commended Ottawa for its vigilance in working with the Canadian trucking industry during the pandemic.<\/p>\n
