{"id":2824,"date":"2020-03-25T20:53:22","date_gmt":"2020-03-25T20:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/trucking-remains-exempt-as-feds-impose-stricter-measures-on-canadians-returning-from-travel\/"},"modified":"2025-04-30T15:42:49","modified_gmt":"2025-04-30T15:42:49","slug":"trucking-remains-exempt-as-feds-impose-stricter-measures-on-canadians-returning-from-travel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/trucking-remains-exempt-as-feds-impose-stricter-measures-on-canadians-returning-from-travel\/","title":{"rendered":"Trucking Remains Exempt as Feds Impose Stricter Measures on Canadians Returning from Travel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government of Canada today announced that Canadians returning from travel abroad will be required to follow mandatory self-isolation\u00a0protocols as of midnight tonight, but the Canadian Trucking Alliance is reminding the trucking industry truck drivers remain exempt from these requirements \u2013 unless an individual becomes symptomatic \u2013 since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/trucking-remains-an-essential-service-as-canada-u-s-close-borders-to-non-essential-traffic\/\">trucking has been named an essential service<\/a>\u00a0in our battle to contain the COVID-19 virus.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement also gives the federal government the power to order travellers to stay home and tools to enforce these regulations through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/acts\/q-1.1\/FullText.html\">Quarantine Act<\/a>, including the use of substantial monetary fines and other measures to ensure compliance.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the federal government in tandem with the Public Health Agency of Canada\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection\/latest-travel-health-advice.html\">posted the following on their website<\/a>\u00a0regarding the transportation sector, truck drivers and exemptions, which still apply:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exemptions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Consequently, an exemption to the request to self-isolate for 14 days should be provided to workers who are essential to the movement of goods and people. For example, this exemption would apply to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Healthy workers in the trade and transportation sector who are important for the movement of goods and people across the border, such as truck drivers and crew on any plane, train or marine vessel crossing the border;<\/li>\n<li>Healthy people who have to cross the border to go to work, including health care providers and critical infrastructure workers;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Workers in these sectors should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>practice social distancing (maintain a distance of 2 metres from others)<\/li>\n<li>closely\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/publications\/diseases-conditions\/self-monitoring-self-isolation-isolation-for-covid-19.html\"><strong>self-monitor<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>self-isolate should they exhibit any symptoms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As indicated in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/feds-recognize-truck-drivers-as-critical-in-fight-against-covid-19\/\">CTA communications released last week<\/a>,\u00a0U.S. Customs and Border Protection have indicated that Canadian drivers should not see any additional issues at the border \u2013 beyond additional screening\/questioning \u2013 unless a truck driver is exhibiting clear symptoms or has returned from a \u201chot spot\u201d country within the last 14 days, as indicated in\u00a0President Trump\u2019s recent Executive Order.\u00a0If a driver tries to cross the border within a 14-day period of returning from one of these locations, they will be denied entry into the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>CTA\u00a0can assure the public and supply chain that our members\u2019 drivers are well educated and trained on proper hygiene and social distancing protocols and other best practices to keep themselves and the employees of their
