{"id":2617,"date":"2019-05-17T15:21:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-17T15:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/analyst-foot-dragging-on-us-eld-upgrade-continues\/"},"modified":"2025-01-21T18:17:54","modified_gmt":"2025-01-21T18:17:54","slug":"analyst-foot-dragging-on-us-eld-upgrade-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/analyst-foot-dragging-on-us-eld-upgrade-continues\/","title":{"rendered":"Analyst: Foot-Dragging on US ELD Upgrade Continues"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up to half of the 3.5 million heavy-duty trucks in the US lack the required ELD equipment and are waiting until the last minute to upgrade, says one market analyst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWe estimate that more than 50 percent of the 3.5 million Class 8 trucks will be required to replace or upgrade the ELD system they are using,\u201d said Donald Broughton, principal and managing partner of Broughton Capital. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in December 2017<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">required ELD digital monitoring<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>to track drivers\u2019 hours of service. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">However, authorities have allowed carriers to continue using older, Automatic On-Board Recording Devices (AOBRD) until Dec. 16, at which point they must switch to fully-functioning ELDs. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Safety inspectors can order a non ELD-compliant truck out of service after that date. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">As reported by <em>Trucks.com<\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">A simple software upgrade is all some of the pre-ELD devices need for full functionality. But many trucks need new ELDs systems that integrate into engine controls.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cIt could be a bigger disruption than December 2017 because people are not planning at this point,\u201d Broughton told Trucks.com. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Productivity could dip, as it did for several months after the original ELD mandate, depending on how many companies try to upgrade at once.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Others think the trucking industry will adjust quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s going to be much drama,\u201d said Kevin Hill, president of<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>CarrierLists, which polled the 259 carriers in its database on migrating to ELDs. Many carriers indicate they will use the same vendor, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The FMCSA and suppliers are urging trucking companies to beat the Dec. 16 deadline.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThis date is not going to move,\u201d said Tom Cuthbertson, Omnitracs\u2019 vice president of
