{"id":2570,"date":"2019-02-21T19:50:13","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T19:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/ftr-2019-will-strong-year-for-trucking\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:47:30","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:47:30","slug":"ftr-2019-will-strong-year-for-trucking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/ftr-2019-will-strong-year-for-trucking\/","title":{"rendered":"FTR: 2019 Will \u2018Strong Year\u2019 for Trucking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is panning out to be a \u201cgood strong year\u201d for trucking, according to Avery Vise, vice-president of trucking for FTR, who spoke during this month\u2019s State of Freight webinar on Feb. 14.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, our outlook for 2019, is mild growth through the year,\u201d Vise said. \u201cYear over year growth won\u2019t be as strong as 2017 and 2018\u2026but it will still be a good, strong year. Just not a crazy one, like we\u2019ve seen for the past 18 months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vise added that the shippers condition index is in positive territory in more than two years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecember was a month in which everyone was happy \u2013 shippers and carriers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>FTR predicted trucking conditions to moderate this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big story of 2018 was the imbalance in the spot market,\u201d Vise explained. \u201cAnd the spot market is still tighter than the five-year average. And it is far now than last year. Spot rates are now closer to average.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the spot market is just one side of the story, Vise said, turning his attention to rates. He said that the degree in which carriers can get drivers will be the \u201cbiggest question mark\u201d in how the year will play out in terms of rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue on everyone\u2019s mind now is rates,\u201d he said. \u201cOverall our forecast is that rates will be close to flat, year-over-year in 2019. Spot rates will likely be down sharply, as much as 7%, and contract rates\u2026.we\u2019re looking at them being up 1-2%\u2026that\u2019s how we see the picture right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Vise said the economy is doing well, considering manufacturing and consumer spending is still strong.
