{"id":2500,"date":"2018-10-02T18:06:15","date_gmt":"2018-10-02T18:06:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/survey-large-majority-of-carriers-shippers-feel-capacity-crunch-price-hikes\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:47:41","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:47:41","slug":"survey-large-majority-of-carriers-shippers-feel-capacity-crunch-price-hikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/survey-large-majority-of-carriers-shippers-feel-capacity-crunch-price-hikes\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey: Large Majority of Carriers, Shippers Feel Capacity Crunch, Price Hikes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"deck\">Inbound Logistics&rsquo; exclusive annual survey of shippers and truckers, which attempts to map out find the industry&rsquo;s most significant trends and challenges, reveals that finding a truck \u2013 and not paying too much more it \u2013 are the two biggest concerns for over-the-road shippers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"deck\">A whopping 78% percent of shippers who responded to the 2018 survey say they&rsquo;ve endured rate hikes, apart from fuel surcharges, this year \u2013a sizeable jump from the 60 percent who saw price hikes in 2017, according to the publication.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Among shippers who responded to the survey, 62 percent say they have experienced a shortage of truck capacity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">When asked to list the biggest challenges they face, 52 percent of shippers who responded to the survey name finding capacity\u00a0\u00bb and 56 percent name \u00ab\u00a0reducing transportation cost.\u00a0\u00bb<a href=\"http:\/\/ontruck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TruckingPerspectives_inline1_0918.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9902 size-medium alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/ontruck.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TruckingPerspectives_inline1_0918-272x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Relatedly, those two issues represent even bigger challenges for trucking companies. Eighty-one percent of carrier respondents list \u00ab\u00a0finding capacity\u00a0\u00bb as one of their greatest challenges, a big jump from the 41 percent who gave that reply in 2017. And a vast majority\u201494 percent\u2014list driver-related costs as an important concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00ab\u00a0We&rsquo;ve increased driver pay by 11 percent year to date, which represents the greatest increase in the history of our company,\u00a0\u00bb says Brent Nussbaum, chief executive officer of Nussbaum Transportation in Hudson, Illinois, told Inbound Logistics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00ab\u00a0But how do you compensate drivers for detention?\u00a0\u00bb he asks. \u00ab\u00a0A constant challenge is figuring out how to equitably pay drivers when they&rsquo;re not driving.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">While the driver shortage puts a strain on capacity, so do federal hours of service (HoS) regulations for drivers. In 2018, 89 percent of trucker respondents say that HoS regulations have had either a marked impact or somewhat of an impact on their operations, an 11-percent increase over 2017. Among shippers, 50 percent say that HoS regulations have had a significant cost or service impact on their operations, and another 20 percent say they have seen somewhat of an impact on their operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Along with cost and capacity, one thing shippers care a great deal about is the quality of service they get from a trucking company. When asked to name the most important factors they consider when choosing a motor carrier, 84 percent mention reliability, and 62 percent name customer service. Not surprisingly, price is also a big factor, mentioned by 73 percent of shippers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">More trucking companies are embracing government programs designed to streamline cross-border trade while enhancing security, reveal responses to a question about certifications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Among trucking company respondents, 67 percent say they participate in the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) program, compared with 63 percent in 2017. Forty-eight percent participate in the Fast and Secure Trade (FAST) program, compared with 39 percent in 2017, and 41 percent participate in Partners in Protection (PIP), compared with 27 percent in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Carriers also continue their commitment to promoting sustainable operations. Among respondents, 96 percent report they are certified through the Environmental Protection Agency&rsquo;s SmartWay program, up slightly from 92 percent in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">One bit of data that emerged from the survey points to a strong sense of optimism, at least among carriers.
