Google\u2019s parent company, Alphabet Inc., is putting money into a tech company that matches shippers to carriers, similar to how rivals Uber and Lyft Inc. connect riders to available drivers.<\/p>\n

Convoy Inc., a\u00a0trucking technology developer\u00a0already backed by Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos,\u00a0 raised US$185 million in financing\u00a0led by CapitalG, Alphabet Inc.\u2019s growth equity fund.<\/p>\n

Three-year-old Convoy makes software that helps\u00a0shippers get better pricing and track deliveries. The system also automatically matches related backhauls.<\/p>\n

According to lawyers for CapitalG, the startup has recently shown that it can improve on-time rates for shippers and fill a larger percentage of requests, and that progress persuaded\u00a0CapitalG to finally invest.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0It’s no longer a theory that they could drive efficiencies,\u00a0\u00bb he said. \u00ab\u00a0They are actually driving efficiencies.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company plans to use the\u00a0money to\u00a0expand. It operates\u00a0in all 50 U.S. states but needs to build\u00a0volume in some newer regions,\u00a0like the Southeast. Convoy will also invest to improve algorithms that help decide how much to charge shippers and how much to pay drivers, as well as software it\u2019s offering to drivers and trucking companies to make their processes easier and more paperless.<\/p>\n
