{"id":2488,"date":"2018-09-14T18:21:45","date_gmt":"2018-09-14T18:21:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/us-tortoise-recovery-expected-to-trek-forward\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:48:01","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:48:01","slug":"us-tortoise-recovery-expected-to-trek-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/us-tortoise-recovery-expected-to-trek-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"US \u2018Tortoise Recovery\u2019 Expected to Trek Forward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">William Strauss, senior economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, said he would not be surprised if at this time next year the US economy will be in the longest-running expansion in U.S history. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Speaking at the FTR Transportation Conference, Strauss said the economy is growing at \u201ca moderate and steady\u201d pace rather than \u201cjackrabbiting ahead in certain sectors, which can cause some concern.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">He labeled it \u201cthe tortoise recovery,\u201d reports Truck News, and noted it has so far delivered just half the growth seen in previous economic recoveries. Despite the slow growth, it continues to grow above trend, which is about 2%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cGiven the duration, and the fact expansions have lasted on average five years, some people will foolishly say we\u2019re due for a recession,\u201d Strauss said. \u201cBut no matter what I tell you today, and no matter how optimistic I may leave you, you\u2019re not going to go back to your business, put your feet on the desk and say \u2018I\u2019ve made enough money. I can just chill.\u2019 That\u2019s not how economies operate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">It will take some kind of \u201cshock to the system\u201d to cause the economy to pull back, Strauss noted, such as a terrorist attack, an imbalance in the housing industry impacting the financial sector, a war, or bad monetary policy. A survey of professional forecasters recently found that the risk of recession is very low. And with growth well above 2%, even a shock to the system that knocks GDP down by 2% still allows for economic growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Compared to other economies, the U.S. economy is the strongest in the world. The Manufacturers Purchasing Index in both the U.S. and Canada is doing well and exceeding global growth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">In conclusion, Strauss said \u201cIt looks like the economy, because of the balance we appear to be in, has an opportunity to continue growing.
