{"id":2466,"date":"2018-08-02T19:30:32","date_gmt":"2018-08-02T19:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/researchers-check-road-conditions-with-ai\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:48:02","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:48:02","slug":"researchers-check-road-conditions-with-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/researchers-check-road-conditions-with-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers Check Road Conditions with AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Researchers at the University of Waterloo have employed artificial intelligence (AI) to create software that can detect problems with roads, bridges and buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">As Truck News reports, the system automatically flags potholes, cracks and other defects by analyzing photographs taken by vehicle-mounted cameras.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cIf governments have that information, they can better plan when to repair a particular road and do it at a lower cost,\u201d said John Zelek, an engineering professor at Waterloo. \u201cEssentially, it could mean lower taxes for residents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">It\u2019s certainly a high-tech approach when compared to the visual inspections that are used in small jurisdictions, or the manual assessments of images recorded by other cameras used for such jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Zelek says the AI system could cut assessment costs, be just as accurate, and support more frequent monitoring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cIt is more consistent analysis because you\u2019re not introducing the biases of different human beings who look at the data differently,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Small jurisdictions could even analyze the video taken by simple cellphone cameras mounted in vehicles while road crews conduct other business, he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at the University of Waterloo have employed artificial intelligence (AI) to create software that can detect problems with roads, bridges and buildings.
