A new working committee of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance<\/a>\u00a0 has been inaugurated to tackle the issue of lack of uniform crash data for truck-involved crashes and the issue of crash accountability within the Compliance, Safety, Accountability program, according to Scott Hernandez, recently retired from the Colorado State Patrol and current CVSA director of crash standards and analysis.<\/p>\n

As reported by CCJ magazine<\/a>, the Crash Data and Investigative Standards Committee\u2019s ultimate\u00a0goal is to work toward uniform reporting and investigative practice in order to \u201cbasically establish a standard protocol and reporting system\u201d for crashes, to \u201chelp everyone with better data \u2013 to do better investigations, and to be more consistent\u201d in all facets of crash investigation and reporting.<\/p>\n

Hernandez notes new committee chair Thomas Fitzgerald, a CVSA member and truck-and-bus-focused lieutenant out of Massachusetts, has driven some of the conversation around the establishment of the committee, noting CVSA \u201cneeds to step up and take a lead on this issue,\u201d Hernandez says. \u201cThis is something that we should strive to do, but we have to start with the basics. \u2026 We\u2019ll start with the training [among state jurisdictions on crashes] being consistent.\u201d<\/p>\n
