{"id":2283,"date":"2017-10-20T16:46:51","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T16:46:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/ota-carriers-need-govt-support-for-mandatory-drug-testing-policies\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:48:55","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:48:55","slug":"ota-carriers-need-govt-support-for-mandatory-drug-testing-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/ota-carriers-need-govt-support-for-mandatory-drug-testing-policies\/","title":{"rendered":"OTA: Carriers Need Gov\u2019t Support for Mandatory Drug Testing Policies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While arguing for zero tolerance enforcement as Canada prepares to legalize marijuana, OTA president Stephen Laskowski also urged the government to make it easier for carriers to implement drug testing programs for commercial drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to CBC, Laskowski emphasized that the industry would like to ensure the sector maintains its stellar safety record for impaired driving among commercial operators.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0In Canada, of all the fatally injured and legally impaired drivers, only 0.7 per cent were tractor trailer drivers. On a percentage basis, this is about 195\u00a0per cent lower than that of passenger vehicles and 178 per cent lower than that of motorcycle drivers.\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0Laskowski\u00a0told CBC in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>While that rate is something the industry should be proud of \u2013 and zero tolerance among carriers is already the industry norm \u2013 Laskowski\u00a0said any case of impaired driving is \u201cinexcusable.\u201d He said that in the wake of legalized recreational marijuana use, federal and provincial governments need to make drug and alcohol testing mandatory for all commercial drivers.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0What we are saying now &#8230; is we need the governments to stand up and say we will stand beside employers and allow safety sensitive positions, like truck driving, drug and alcohol testing programs, without question, to be legal in Canada.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>He said not all companies have the means or resources to go through a human rights challenge when an employee refuses to take a drug and alcohol test, which is why we need to \u00ab\u00a0allow employers, across Canada, to have the power, to manage this system.
