{"id":2234,"date":"2017-08-10T19:09:24","date_gmt":"2017-08-10T19:09:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/suppliers-warn-carriers-operators-not-to-wait-on-elds\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:49:04","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:49:04","slug":"suppliers-warn-carriers-operators-not-to-wait-on-elds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/suppliers-warn-carriers-operators-not-to-wait-on-elds\/","title":{"rendered":"Suppliers Warn Carriers, Operators Not to Wait on ELDs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Makers of electronic logs are warning carriers not to wait until the last moment to comply with the U.S. mandate scheduled for Dec. 18, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a measure last month by a House committee to <a href=\"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/ata-calls-to-stay-the-course-on-elds\/\">review the rule<\/a>, providers say they don\u2019t expect any delays and warn of a supply crunch for electronic components later this year, reports Fleet Owner.<\/p>\n<p>With the House and Senate both in recess until Sept. 5, \u201cwe are not sure it is even possible by the time the mandate is supposed to take effect that they could get something done,\u201d said Eric Witty, PeopleNet\u2019s vice president of product management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is business as usual for us,\u201d said Tom Neppl, vice president of hardware solutions at Omnitracs. \u201cWe are proceeding as the Dec. 18 date will occur \u2026 We don\u2019t anticipate any change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Norm Ellis, president of ERoad, said fleets with between 10-50 trucks are the most likely to hesitate on ELD implementation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can\u2019t wait too much longer,\u201d said Ellis, who recommends a four-to-six week transition period to allow the back office staff to undergo the \u201ccultural change\u201d that comes with ELD.<\/p>\n<p>With no delay imminent, the ELD executives expect a surge in demand, a situation Omnitracs\u2019 Neppl warned could be complicated by a shortage of electronic components.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese aren\u2019t parts that sit on the shelf somewhere,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it behooves the industry \u2026 to take into consideration the macroeconomics going on that could potentially drive some constraints on ELD solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The result, PeopleNet\u2019s Witty said, is that \u201cfleets could end up being forced to adopt anything to be compliant.
