That essentially was the message U.S. automakers delivered to the Trump administration this week.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Politico.com, and as reported in U.S. trucking trade press, \u00a0automakers are pushing President Trump \u00ab\u00a0not to make any changes to NAFTA that would jeopardize production ties with Canada and Mexico that have been built up over the last 25 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Car makers are now \u00ab\u00a0performing at levels that really haven&rsquo;t been seen in decades,\u00a0\u00bb said Charles Uthus, vice president for international policy at the American Automotive Policy Council, who credits much of that success to NAFTA.<\/p>\n<p>The AAPC contends that hiking tariffs between the three NAFTA signatories would hurt the competitiveness of the North American region. The report also stated that parts manufacturers don\u2019t want any changes to the agreement that would \u201c\u00a0\u00bbupset the supply chain.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p><em>Heavy Duty Trucking<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truckinginfo.com\/news\/story\/2017\/05\/automakers-fear-nafta-changes.aspx\">continued<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps in recognition of the inevitability of Trump pursuing some reforms of NAFTA, AAPC President Matt Blunt issued a statement on May 18 that seeks to avoid breaking eggs by whipping NAFTA into a tastier omelette. \u201cNAFTA has helped to boost the global competitiveness of the U.S. auto industry sector and we support modernizing the agreement in ways that will further strengthen North America as a manufacturing powerhouse, stimulate economic growth and drive job creation,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Blunt said that AAPC encourages administration \u201cto seize this opportunity\u201d to work with Canada and Mexico \u201cto support strong and enforceable currency manipulation disciplines in trade agreements and encourage the global acceptance of vehicles built to U.S. auto safety standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that such an update of NAFTA will increase the export of American vehicles and auto parts \u201cand grow the number of high-quality and high-paying American jobs supported by such exports.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAFTA works, so don\u2019t mess with success.
