{"id":2178,"date":"2017-05-24T18:42:14","date_gmt":"2017-05-24T18:42:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/autonomous-truck-symposium-driving-a-lot-more-than-holding-a-wheel\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:49:12","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:49:12","slug":"autonomous-truck-symposium-driving-a-lot-more-than-holding-a-wheel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/autonomous-truck-symposium-driving-a-lot-more-than-holding-a-wheel\/","title":{"rendered":"Autonomous Truck Symposium: \u2018Driving a lot More Than Holding A Wheel\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trucking technology may one day evolve to the point that the tractor can drive itself, but that is likely to come in small steps rather than giant leap.<\/p>\n<p>Moderating a panel discussion at<a href=\"http:\/\/ccjdigital.com\/tag\/ccj-spring-symposium-2017\"> <em>CCJ<\/em>\u2018s Symposium <\/a>in Asheville, N.C., Tuesday afternoon,\u00a0Bishop Consulting Principal Richard Bishop downplayed the amount of obstacles in the path of autonomous trucking.<\/p>\n<p>He suggested roads and highways don\u2019t need to be significantly changed or redeveloped to accommodate automation and vehicles, trucks don\u2019t necessarily need to be connected to one another and the amount of new laws and regulations required to put autonomous trucks on the road is overstated.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Bishop dismissed speculation that high automation will replace human truck drivers. He says technology will instead allow\u00a0drivers to focus on other aspects of their job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing has ever been done for vehicles that allows divers to do something else with their brain,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s what changes everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Xpress Executive Chairman Max Fuller agreed, and said advancements in technology are happening quickly. \u201cIn the next 5 to 10 years, we\u2019ll see more technology than we\u2019ve seen in probably the last 50 years,\u201d added<\/p>\n<p>When U.S. Xpress hits Level 5 autonomy, Fuller says he doesn\u2019t envision taking the driver out of the truck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey do a lot more than just hold the steering wheel,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Full <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccjdigital.com\/ccj-symposium-panel-equipment-technology-evolving-trucking\/\">CCJ story here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trucking technology may one day evolve to the point that the tractor can drive itself, but that is likely to come in small steps rather than giant leap.
