{"id":2165,"date":"2017-05-05T17:45:47","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T17:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/natgas-regaining-traction-in-trucking\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:49:31","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:49:31","slug":"natgas-regaining-traction-in-trucking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/natgas-regaining-traction-in-trucking\/","title":{"rendered":"NatGas Regaining Traction in Trucking?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although North American fuel prices are still well below record highs of a decade ago, the natural market \u2013 driven by a new set of market forces \u2013 keeps inching forward, a panel of industry insiders said at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.actexpo.com\/\">Advanced Clean Transportation<\/a> (ACT) Expo.<\/p>\n<p>As reported by <em>Fleet Owner<\/em> magazine, the spotlight on natural gas commercial trucks as an alternative power resource has \u201cdimmed a bit\u201d since diesel prices began falling over several years. But proponents say the industry is overcoming challenges and turning a corner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tide has shifted,\u201d said Dean Stapleton, senior manager of alternative fuels for Penske Truck Leasing.\u00a0 \u201cIt is not a money play. It is now a sustainability play, a lot of times driven by the shipper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many barriers exist, however, such as initial higher vehicle cost, compared with diesel, and fueling infrastructure is still lacking in many parts of North America.<\/p>\n<p>But with the passage of time comes a better understanding on how to overcome other obstacles and new technology is further alleviating other worries.<\/p>\n<p>William Nowicke, COO and president at Agility Fuel Solutions, said fewer sensors and elimination of diesel particulate filters makes the maintenance of natural gas-fired trucks easier than conventional diesels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatural gas trucks can outperform traditional diesel models on a cost-per-mile basis after five years,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>There are some signals the natural gas market is gaining traction.<\/p>\n<p>In April, research firm ACT reported that U.S. and Canadian natural gas heavy-duty sales have accelerated, even if they remain only about 3% share of the overall market.<\/p>\n<p>Penske\u2019s Stapleton suggested it would only take one incident to send diesel soaring for the mood surrounding natural gas to change instantaneously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf oil goes to $80-to-$90 a barrel, we won\u2019t be able to keep the phone on the hook,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the Ontario government committing <a href=\"http:\/\/ontruck.org\/ota-outlines-complete-funding-plan-for-natgas-transition\/\">$250 million towards<\/a> investment for technology to reduce carbon emissions from heavy trucks.
