{"id":2122,"date":"2017-03-07T16:07:01","date_gmt":"2017-03-07T16:07:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/data-higher-driver-turnover-can-lead-to-poorer-csa-scores\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:49:38","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:49:38","slug":"data-higher-driver-turnover-can-lead-to-poorer-csa-scores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/data-higher-driver-turnover-can-lead-to-poorer-csa-scores\/","title":{"rendered":"Data: Higher Driver Turnover Can Lead to Poorer CSA Scores"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Vigillo data firm, which has about 2,000 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccjdigital.com\/topic\/equipment\/\">trucking fleet<\/a> customers for its compliance data mining and monitoring services, found that fleets with the highest turnover rates generally have higher crash rates and poorer CSA scores than fleets with better driver turnover rates.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at Conversion Interactive Agency\u2019s Recruiting and Retention conference last week, Steve Bryan, president and founder of Vigillo, laid out the results for the audience of recruiters.<\/p>\n<p><em>CCJ magazine<\/em> reports:<\/p>\n<p>[otaTextBox padding=\u00a0\u00bb20&Prime;]<\/p>\n<p>Setting aside CSA\u2019s myriad of other issues \u2014 those that led Congress to revoke the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccjdigital.com\/revamped-csa-scores-likely-wont-return-for-two-years-sec-foxx-says\/\">CSA Safety Measurement System<\/a> from public view and direct FMCSA to rework the system \u2014 Bryan urged his audience to consider what he sees as \u201cstrong correlations\u201d between the broader \u201csafety culture that exists in a motor carrier \u2014 I\u2019m going to propose that it <em>can<\/em> be measured in CSA \u2014 and turnover rates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vigillo\u2019s service allows the company visibility into client\u00a0carriers\u2019 driver-employees as they enter and exit in the company\u2019s database. He and data scientists at the company measured all client carriers\u2019 turnover rates on the basis of such entries and exits, discarding those who fell in the middle and looking at the difference in compliance performance for equivalently-sized groups in the 25 percent with the highest turnover versus the 25 percent with the lowest turnover. Results\u00a0showed that in all 9 analyzed metrics, high turnover carriers performed significantly worse than low-turnover carriers.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how the SMS scores in the seven <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccjdigital.com\/fmcsa-may-add-eighth-basic-to-csa-system-to-satisfy-carrier-incentive-program-requirements\/\">CSA BASICs<\/a> worked out, with high-attrition\/turnover carriers represented by the orange bar in each pair, the low turnover fleets by the blue:<\/p>\n<p>The differences were even more stark in metrics that drivers and carriers tend to trust as better correlating to safety performance, those outside of CSA BASIC scores, such as out-of-service inspections\u00a0and volume of DOT-recordable crashes. High-turnover carriers had a \u201cdriver out-of-service rate 189 percent higher,\u201d Bryan said, than low-turnover carriers.
