{"id":2013,"date":"2016-09-29T19:05:31","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T19:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/nacfe-double-truck-platoon-can-reduce-fuel-consumption-by-4-10\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:49:57","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:49:57","slug":"nacfe-double-truck-platoon-can-reduce-fuel-consumption-by-4-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/nacfe-double-truck-platoon-can-reduce-fuel-consumption-by-4-10\/","title":{"rendered":"NACFE: Double Truck Platoon Can Reduce Fuel Consumption by 4-10%"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two-truck platoons have the potential to reduce fuel consumption by about 4%, averaged across both vehicles, according to a report by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE).<\/p>\n<p>As reported by <em>Truck News<\/em>, the reviewed previous testing and then adjusted for on-track test results which took account real-world, on-road realities such as traffic congestion and realistic times the trucks would be able to remain in formation (about 75% of the time). Track testing has shown the lead truck reducing fuel consumption by 4% while the following truck saves 10%. with a following distance of 40-50 feet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we wanted to do was understand the early stages of a path towards more automation in trucking,\u201d NACFE\u2019s Mike Roeth stated in the report. \u201cWe see platooning being the next logical automation, and on down the line, lane-keeping and other technologies for assisting drivers and then finally self-driving or autonomous trucks either as part of a platoon or by themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roeth added platooning does not imply driverless trucks, which is not fully understood today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo-truck platooning is not fully autonomous or driverless,\u201d Roeth said. \u201cIt\u2019s being improperly grouped with that concept.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though platooning is not yet in use, many of the technologies that will enable it are already available, Roeth pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bulk of the required technology is currently available and being purchased by many fleets,\u201d he said, referencing collision mitigation systems and in-cab cameras. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>You can download the full report <a href=\"http:\/\/truckingefficiency.org\/operational-practices\/two-truck-platooning\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two-truck platoons have the potential to reduce fuel consumption by about 4%, averaged across both vehicles, according to a report by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE).
