{"id":1977,"date":"2016-07-22T20:50:55","date_gmt":"2016-07-22T20:50:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/survey-carriers-drivers-shortchanged-by-shipper-detention\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:50:06","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:50:06","slug":"survey-carriers-drivers-shortchanged-by-shipper-detention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/survey-carriers-drivers-shortchanged-by-shipper-detention\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey: Carriers, Drivers Shortchanged by Shipper Detention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new survey takes a close look at the problem of how long truck drivers are detained by shippers and consignees and finds that nearly 63% of commercial truck drivers spend more than three hours waiting for their vehicle to be\u00a0loaded and unloaded.<\/p>\n<p>As reported by Today\u2019s Trucking, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dat.com\/resources\/white-papers\/detention-survey-carriers\">the DAT Solutions survey<\/a> found that\u00a0 out of the 247 carriers surveyed, 54%\u00a0reported typical detention times of three to four hours,\u00a0while 9% said it was common\u00a0to be detained five or more hours.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the carriers surveyed said they are seldom paid for detention,\u00a0and when\u00a0payment is offered, it does not cover the full business cost that results from the delay.<\/p>\n<p>Only 3% of carriers were paid on 90% or more of their detention claims, at a rate\u00a0between\u00a0$30 and $50 per hour, according to survey respondents. Even when the claims were paid,\u00a0however, that level of\u00a0compensation did not cover the opportunity costs to their business.<\/p>\n<p>Driver detention is an urgent issue that must be addressed by the industry, says Don\u00a0Thornton,\u00a0Senior VP at DAT Solutions. \u201cIt\u2019s a matter of fairness,\u00a0\u00bb he said. \u00ab\u00a0Many shippers and\u00a0receivers are lax about\u00a0their dock operations but it\u2019s the carriers and drivers who are forced to pay\u00a0for that inefficiency.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s Trucking reports that 84% of respondents said detention is one of the top five business problems they face. By contrast, among the 50 freight brokers who responded to the survey, only\u00a020%\u00a0agreed that detention was one of their top five problems, while 78% said other issues had a\u00a0bigger impact on business.<\/p>\n<p>Carriers were\u00a0often forced to turn down\u00a0other loads while their trucks were detained and unavailable.<\/p>\n<p>Freight brokers who were reimbursed by their shipper customers were twice as likely to\u00a0compensate carriers\u00a0for detention.
