{"id":1960,"date":"2016-06-16T16:19:32","date_gmt":"2016-06-16T16:19:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/senators-tear-down-barriers-to-truck-configurations-single-tire-uniformity\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:50:13","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:50:13","slug":"senators-tear-down-barriers-to-truck-configurations-single-tire-uniformity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/senators-tear-down-barriers-to-truck-configurations-single-tire-uniformity\/","title":{"rendered":"Senators: Tear Down Barriers to Truck Configurations, Single Tire Uniformity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Provincial discrepancies in truck configuration standards and limits on the use of high-tech, fuel-efficient single tires are among two of the most \u201cmind-boggling\u201d policies \u201csapping billions of dollars\u201d from the Canadian economy each year, according to the Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>Senators released a report on internal barriers to trade, called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parl.gc.ca\/content\/sen\/committee\/421\/BANC\/Reports\/2016-06-13_BANC_FifthReport_SS-2_tradebarriers(FINAL)_E.pdf\"><em>Tear Down These Walls: Dismantling Canada\u2019s Internal Trade Barriers<\/em><\/a>. In it, they say \u201cdueling bureaucracies and maddening regulations\u201d among various jurisdictions are creating barriers to internal trade and weighing down Canada\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>Number 1 and 2 on the committee\u2019s somewhat cheeky Top 10 List of \u2018weirdest\u2019 trade barriers that should be dismantled concern the trucking industry:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u201cSome (oversize\/overweight) truck configurations must be driven at night in British Columbia \u2014 and only during the day in neighbouring Alberta. Insomniacs rejoice.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSome provinces impose limits on the use of high-tech fuel-efficient tires so truckers have to swap them out at the border. Pit crews not included.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These are some of the same issues raised by the BCTA, AMTA and CTA at three separate Senate hearings over the spring.<\/p>\n<p>The full report (attached) highlights several other trucking policy inconsistencies across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal, provincial and territorial governments have allowed internal barriers to trade to persist. The committee urges co-operation between all levels of government to reduce the significant costs these barriers impose on Canadian consumers, businesses and workers. The federal government is in the best position to lead on this issue,\u201d the committee said.<\/p>\n<p>It is the hope of the trucking associations the report serves to educate politicians and policy makers on removing regulatory barriers which would make the industry and the economy more efficient.<\/p>\n<p>For the full report <a
