{"id":1789,"date":"2015-08-07T19:19:38","date_gmt":"2015-08-07T19:19:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/cargo-thieves-testing-new-tactics\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:51:38","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:51:38","slug":"cargo-thieves-testing-new-tactics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/cargo-thieves-testing-new-tactics\/","title":{"rendered":"Cargo Thieves Testing New Tactics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fake trucking companies are but the latest tactic being used by criminals to steal cargo reports <em>Fleet Owner.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to Scott Cornell, director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/fleetowner.com\/blog\/cargo-theft-s-private-eyes\">Specialty Investigations Group<\/a> (SIG) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelers.com\/\">Travelers Insurance<\/a> \u2013 new twists in cargo theft now include breaking up stolen loads in small groupings and storing the goods in residential homes rather than all in one warehouse or storage unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are starting to shy away from using warehouses,\u201d Cornell told Fleet Owner. \u201cBreaking up a load makes full recoveries harder to achieve and hiding it in residential areas makes stakeouts and other law enforcement activity more difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His advice is step up your due diligence on any new company:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are dealing with a brand new company, with no track record and no reference \u2018pool\u2019 of information to draw from, they need to be checked out in a little more detail,\u201d Cornell explained to Fleet Owner. \u201cThe same goes for a carrier whose authority has lain dormant for several years and is now suddenly active.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cornell added that effective communication and networking within the freight transportation industry is critical to spreading the word about such new and\/or altered cargo theft schemes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntelligence sharing is the key to thwarting cargo thieves \u2013 communicating information quickly between the private sector, insurers, and law enforcement,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>On this side of the border the Canadian Trucking Alliance and the Insurance Bureau of Canada teamed up to launch a national online <a href=\"http:\/\/assets.ibc.ca\/Documents\/Insurance%20Crime\/cargo_theft\/Initiative-to-Fight-Cargo-Theft.pdf\">Cargo Theft Reporting Program<\/a> to help expedite investigations and recovery of stolen freight .<\/p>\n<p>Full Fleet Owner article <a href=\"http:\/\/fleetowner.com\/fleet-management\/tackling-new-cargo-theft-tactics\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fake trucking companies are but the latest tactic being used by criminals to steal cargo reports Fleet Owner.
