{"id":1782,"date":"2015-07-24T19:38:17","date_gmt":"2015-07-24T19:38:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/could-retirees-help-ease-driver-shortage\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:51:38","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:51:38","slug":"could-retirees-help-ease-driver-shortage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/could-retirees-help-ease-driver-shortage\/","title":{"rendered":"Could Retirees Help Ease Driver Shortage?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An annual survey conducted by insurance giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwesternmutual.com\/\">Northwestern Mutual<\/a> finds that self-described workers in the U.S. expect to retire at age 68 \u2013 a full decade later than when current retirees left the work force \u2013 with 62% saying they need to keep working longer \u201cfrom necessity\u201d as the vast majority (79%) cite \u201cinsufficient savings\u201d and \u201clack of confidence in social safety nets\u201d as the reasons.<\/p>\n<p>The firm\u2019s findings \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwesternmutual.com\/about-us\/studies\/planning-and-progress-2015-study\"><i>2015 Planning &amp; Progress Study<\/i><\/a><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> \u2013<\/span><\/em><em> was reported by Fleet Owner:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoor communication\u201d may be a contributing factor to delaying retirement involuntarily as four in 10 of the 5,474 American adults aged 18 or older participating in the survey said they haven\u2019t discussed retirement with anyone while a full third (35%) do not have any sense of how much income they will need to retire.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0With life expectancy increasing, planning for retirement is essentially like preparing for a vacation that could last decades,\u00a0\u00bb noted <strong>Rebekah Barsch<\/strong>, VP of planning at Northwestern Mutual, in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Yet that \u201cvacation\u201d is going to require a good bit of funding \u2013 especially if it lasts for decades. So could piloting a truck during that \u201cvacation\u201d period help provide some of that needed monetary backing? <em>Fleet Owner\u2019s<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/fleetowner.com\/blog\/could-retiree-work-necessity-help-ease-driver-shortage \" target=\"_blank\">Sean Kilcarr<\/a> asks:<\/p>\n<p>It could be a \u201cwin-win\u201d in a way for both parties here \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/fleetowner.com\/blog\/wisdom-ages\">older Americans<\/a> and the trucking industry \u2013 as the <a href=\"http:\/\/fleetowner.com\/blog\/dipping-older-worker-pool\">dearth of younger workers<\/a> and their <a href=\"http:\/\/fleetowner.com\/blog\/fear-other-drivers\">lack of enthusiasm for driving<\/a>, much less <a href=\"http:\/\/fleetowner.com\/fleet-management\/recruiting-changes-needed-attract-younger-workers\">driving trucks for a living<\/a>, becomes more readily apparent.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few other factors at work: When looking toward retirement, only 12% of future retirees envision being completely out from the work force, Northwestern Mutual found in its poll \u2013 contrasting significantly with current retirees, nearly four in five of whom report being completely retired.<\/p>\n<p>And regardless of lifestyle expectations, adults who are not yet retired are substantially less optimistic about their retirement prospects than current retirees, the insurance firm found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only 68% of future retirees expect to be happy in retirement compared to 80% of current retirees;<\/li>\n<li>61% of current retirees say they have maintained their quality of life in retirement while only 52% of future retirees expect to;<\/li>\n<li>Only half (54%) of future retirees believe they will be able to focus on activities such as health and fitness relative to three quarters (74%) of current retirees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yet there are other more positive factors at work, too. According to the insurance company\u2019s poll, nearly 40% of future retirees are planning to work longer by choice for these top three:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enjoy job\/career (66%)<\/li>\n<li>Want additional disposable income (60%)<\/li>\n<li>Seek social outlet to stay active and prevent boredom (49%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Interestingly, it is Millennials (aged 18 to 34) and Matures (aged 69 and over) \u2013 two generations at the extreme ends of the career lifecycle \u2013 that are the most enthusiastic about the prospect of continuing to work.<\/p>\n<p>Can trucking successfully tap into those trends to help fill its vacant driver seats?
