{"id":1641,"date":"2014-10-28T19:03:42","date_gmt":"2014-10-28T19:03:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/sleeper-pilot-program-on-track-for-2016\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:52:10","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:52:10","slug":"sleeper-pilot-program-on-track-for-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/sleeper-pilot-program-on-track-for-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Sleeper Pilot Program on Track for 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration\u2019s research division says it\u2019ll likely be another year before it launches a pilot program to see if drivers can safely split their sleeper berth rest time.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>Heavy Duty Trucking<\/em>, the contract to conduct the 90-day study will be let in December, but the project will have to be cleared by the Office of Management and Budget, and the administrative preparations \u2013 leading to a possible 2016 start date.<\/p>\n<p>The agency is undertaking the pilot at the request of carriers and drivers who want more flexible sleeper rules, reports HDT.<\/p>\n<p>The current rule says drivers who use the sleeper berth must take at least eight consecutive hours in it, plus two separate consecutive hours either in the berth, off-duty or any combination of the two.<\/p>\n<p>In remarks to the Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee in Alexandria, Va., and agency official confirmed FMCSA aims to test the premise that greater flexibility will reduce driver fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>FMCSA will work with industry groups to solicit and screen select drivers through a website. Drivers who are accepted will be trained in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truckinginfo.com\/channel\/drivers\/news\/story\/2013\/04\/fatigue-management-program-near-completion.aspx\">North American Fatigue Management Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Their driving behavior will be tracked through onboard monitoring systems, including electronic logs.
