{"id":1628,"date":"2014-10-02T17:34:18","date_gmt":"2014-10-02T17:34:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/deloitte-digital-holiday-sales-impacting-supply-chain\/"},"modified":"2025-01-10T16:52:10","modified_gmt":"2025-01-10T16:52:10","slug":"deloitte-digital-holiday-sales-impacting-supply-chain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cantruck.ca\/fr\/deloitte-digital-holiday-sales-impacting-supply-chain\/","title":{"rendered":"Deloitte: Digital Holiday Sales Impacting Supply Chain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The peak sales season isn\u2019t going anywhere \u2013 it\u2019s just changing rapidly, which has big implications for freight movers, according to market forecasters.<\/p>\n<p>As reported by Fleet owner, consulting firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/us\/\">Deloitte LLC\u2019s<\/a> predicts a uptick in holiday sales this year, but a significant portion of that is expected to be conducted online via e-commerce, which could further complicate supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>The firm expects retail and distribution holiday sales in the U.S. to climb as much as $986 billion \u2013 a 4% to 4.5% increase in November through January holiday sales, excluding motor vehicles and gasoline, compared to the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p>However, Deloitte is also forecasting a 14% increase in \u201cnon-store\u201d sales via online and mail order channels during the 2014 holiday season \u2013 with \u201cdigital interactions\u201d by consumers via smartphones, computers, tablets, and other devices expected to influence 50% or $345 billion of retail stores sales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research indicates that 84% of shoppers use digital tools before and during their trip to a store,\u201d said Alison Paul, vice chairman of Deloitte LLP and the firm\u2019s retail and distribution sector leader. \u201cAdditionally, those shoppers convert, or make a purchase, at a 40% higher rate than those who do not use such devices during their shopping journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet that \u201cdigital shift\u201d could also complicate freight transportation efforts to a high degree this holiday season, cautioned Robert Nathan, CEO of third party logistics firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loaddelivered.com\/\">Load Delivered<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If \u00a0last year\u2019s e-commerce impact on holiday freight was a \u201cstrong current,\u201d he told Fleet Owner, than this year it\u2019s going to be a \u201cTsunami \u2013 \u00a0a tidal wave that\u2019s going to create big challenges in the supply chain\u201d and could overwhelm freight carriers already experiencing a shortage of capacity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe shippers and carriers alike need to hedge themselves better,\u201d he stressed. \u201cThe supply chain is so complex now that transportation planning works best by \u2018hyper-specialization\u2019 in particular modes and markets. I<\/p>\n<p>Nathan predicts the holiday surge will generate what he describes as an \u201cunprecedented acceleration\u201d in demand for time sensitive and perishable temperature-controlled shipments in comparison to previous years, as well as for \u201creverse logistics\u201d services.<\/p>\n<p>He cited the \u00a0\u201cmassive amount of e-commerce returns \u2013 how to sort, re-pack and re-sequence goods \u201c part of the \u201csurge in volume due to gift returns after the holiday season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan says his company is preparing by using more focused data generated by technology to \u00a0better navigate the freight demands generated by e-commerce.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The peak sales season isn\u2019t going anywhere \u2013 it\u2019s just changing rapidly, which has big implications for freight movers, according to market forecasters.
